In Western Zambia, thousands of children are in need. The high prevalence of poverty, relentless grip of HIV/AIDS and high incidence of child abuse has left countless young souls orphaned and vulnerable. Amidst this sea of adversity, hope does prevail.
The mission of Village of Hope Mongu is unwavering: to bring lasting hope to children in need by providing them with love and holistic care so that they can embrace adulthood as independent and contributing members of society. We believe that every child, no matter their circumstances, deserves the chance to flourish and succeed.

Children from preschool-Grade 12 attend school 5 days per week at various hours of the day during school terms. The school consists of early-childhood classes, primary and secondary school. Our school follows the government curriculum but adds in additional creative courses and physical education to the school day.
Currently we have 862 children in the school. Every child receives social support from their teachers, education at the school, quality healthcare through our health clinic, and one nutritious meal every day.
At our Children’s Homes, we want to ensure that children are being looked after physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Currently we have a total of 43 children in the children’s homes. We also have 2 youth boys in our transitional youth housing. We have been able to successfully reintegrate 16 children into their families over the last 2 years.
Each house has a full-time mother who is there day and night and is the primary caregiver for the children in her care. The homes also have the assistance of an aunty who comes in on weekdays from 8-4 who help with the washing, dishes, cooking lunch, and general childcare. The aunties also fill in for the mothers when they have their “day-off”.
60% of people live in poverty in the province. Thereby families cannot afford to purchase the medicines their child need and the condition of the child is left untreated.
Our pediatric clinic exists to provide excellent primary healthcare to children in Mongu. Our clinic’s patient load comes from all of the children that are part of VOH Mongu programs, which averages around 900 children. Additionally, the clinic is open to all children in the community who are not part of the VOH programs. As part of providing excellent healthcare, our clinic keeps stock of all the medicines needed to treat the most common childhood illnesses and provides these to families free of charge.
Child welfare is a massive problem in Western Zambia. Arguably the largest of these issues, is malnourishment in early childhood. About 8 out of every 100 children born alive, will never see their 5th birthday due to malnourishment.
At Save a Life severely malnourished children are admitted to the Save a Life Centre where they receive the medical care and the food they need to fully recover. We also educate and help the child’s caregiver to understand how to care for the child once they leave the program after 6 months.
We aim to see all children with special needs in the Western Province of Zambia have access to a program (i.e., Champions Club) that will:
The Discipleship Center is there for children to come to after school and spend their afternoon in an encouraging environment. There is room for extra classes and homework, children can develop their skills like singing, playing an instrument or even photography and it’s a safe space to talk to someone when needed.
We also run Child Safety from the Discipleship Center with someone available for the children to speak to whenever needed.
We have a food sustainability project that provides VOH with income, training for our students, and a reliable food source. We do this by raising chickens and running a fish farm. Once the chickens and fish are old enough, we sell them to people in the community at a price where we can make a profit and put money back into these projects.
